Mzee's Last Act of Kindness to Patient in Hospital

The late President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi paid a patient's medical bill three days before he died at Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday, February 4.

Moi is said to have written Jayne Jepchirichir Chelimo's last cheque on Saturday, February 1, 2020.

According to The Standard, Jepchirchir, who has a heart condition, uses an estimated Ksh 50,000 to Ksh 80,000 every month on medication and Moi paid the amount every month without fail.

In particular, Chelimo recounted that in 2007, her health deteriorated and Mzee Moi took her to India for specialised treatment.

"Mzee Moi booked my ticket to travel to India for surgery and paid all the bills. He did not care about his status and position in society. Whenever I called, he answered and assured me of his support throughout my life," she stated.

Chelimo, a nurse at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), first met the former president in 2002 at Moi High School Kabarak.

She came from a humble background and her parents were not able to cater for her school fees. Moi, on learning of her plight, took up the matter and helped her through her education.

"I am in shock, Moi was like a father to me, he has been taking care of me the way a father would to his child. When he learnt that my parents couldn't raise my fees, he didn't hesitate to lend a helping hand.

"He did it wholeheartedly until I completed my masters in 2014," Chelimo stated.

Chelimo told the publication that Mzee Moi constantly emphasized on the need to work hard and making use of every opportunity she came across.

"I am alive because he paid for my medical bills. I also got to school because he chose to help me. I will forever be indebted to him and his family. I am who I am because of him," Chelimo concluded.
