Sonko Begs for Help From Govt After Sabotage

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has turned to the national government for help after claiming he was being sabotaged ever since he was barred from office.

A report by Daily Nation, on Monday, February 10indicated that the governor, who is facing a graft charges, is looking to engage the National Youth Service (NYS) after complaining that a number of contractors were taking advantage of his situation to sabotage road works.

The governor had raised concerns that the roads were dilapidated and that garbage was piling up in some parts of the city.

“There has been deliberate sabotage in garbage collection over the last two months I have been out of office, leading to an unnecessary pile-up of refuse across the city,” stated Sonko.

On Friday, January 24, the county boss, as a result, instructed the acting County Secretary Leboo Morintat to reach out to NYS Director-General Matilda Sakwa for a partnership to salvage the situation.

Among the issues Sonko wants taken over by NYS include rehabilitating and repairing roads, collecting garbage and drilling of boreholes.

Morintat put the plan in motion and reached out to the NYS and their first engagement took place on Friday, February 4.

“We are very well advanced in the agreement. We should start the programme early this week,” noted Environment executive Larry Wambua as quoted by the publication.

The meeting is aimed at establishing a government to government (G2G) contractual agreement.

Currently, the county possess the capacity to collect 1,000 tonnes of the garbage. The garbage menace in the city is perhaps demonstrable by Dandora Dumpsite's 1.8 million tonnes of waste against a capacity of 500,000 tonnes.
