Seven suspected thugs were on Thursday, February 20, gunned down by police officers from the Special Service Unit (SSU) in Isinya, Kajiado County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects were felled at around 1.30 a.m. as they drove in a car. Detectives allegedly asked them to stop but the driver defied the order, with one person firing at the officers sparking a shoot-out that left all seven individuals dead.

Two police jackets, an AK47 rifle and a police communication device were recovered from the slain individuals.

SSU chief Pius Gitari disclosed that the men had been tracked down from Nairobi where they traveled from, claiming they had been terrorising Isinya residents.

“The gang had moved to Isinya thinking it is poorly policed where they have been staging attacks. We are all over,” he told reporters.

The bodies of the suspected thugs were moved to a mortuary in Kajiado.

Locals had complained over a sharp increase in crime in recent weeks, particularly robberies at homes and various business establishments as well as carjackings.

Gitari revealed that officers from the Special Service Unit were deployed to Isinya over the preceding weekend seeking to get leads on the gang allegedly behind the crimes that have left residents living in fear.

In August 2019, Isinya police boss Kinyua Mugambi had decried the upsurge in crime after several hoteliers in the area complained of being attacked and robbed at gunpoint.

After the arrest of two individuals in connection with the robberies, Mugambi claimed that the two were part of a larger criminal gang that had carried out several robberies in Isinya.

At the time, Mugambi stated that the gang of ten men would target business premises and upmarket neighborhoods.

He stated that the two individuals would give them vital leads to facilitate the arrest of the rest of the gang members.

"We have been trailing these suspected criminals for a while but we can confidently say that we now have a breakthrough," he stated.
