5 Die in Mombasa Bus Crash

Five people died Wednesday morning while 20 others were left injured following a tragic road accident along the Nairobi - Mombasa highway.

The accident, which involved a lorry and Chania Cool bus, took place at Salama area along the busy highway when the two vehicles got into a head on collision.

Police stated that the accident happened after the lorry driver tried to overtake another vehicle, only to ram into the Chania Cool Bus which was speeding.

“The lorry's driver is believed to have miscalculated the distance when he decided to overtake at a hilly place while the bus was moving at high speed. Among the dead was the bus driver,” narrated Traffic Commandant Jacinta Kinyua as quoted by The Standard.

Following the crash, the bus veered off the road before it overturned killing five passengers. The injured were rushed to Sultan Hamud Hospital.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recently indicated that road accidents have been on a rising trend, with most incidents being attributed to careless driving.

Last month, 7 people perished in a grisly road accident involving a matatu and a truck in Mariakani, Mombasa. In the crash which also happened along Nairobi- Mombasa road, the two vehicles rammed into each other from opposite directions leaving survivors with severe injuries.
