When he started off as a student at the Mangalore University in India (2003-2006), Douglas Waudo had a job as a DJ that guaranteed him Ksh32,000 every end of every month, and also received cash from home for sustenance.

Speaking at an event at the All-Saints Cathedral on January 25, 2020, Waudo revealed that the guaranteed money launched him into a world of reckless spending, a matter that trailed him into the country when he returned in 2006.

"I came home in 2006, and by God's grace, I got a job immediately at an NGO where my salary started rising and within a year or two, I was being paid Ksh350,000 net. I was around 25 or 26," he stated.

Waudo told the gathering at the event that within one week of receiving his salary, he would be dead broke and would start borrowing from friends to survive for the rest of the month.

This cycle, he intimated, went on for five years, where he would spend his money drinking, entertaining friends and hopping from club to club living a life of abandon.

"I was on top of the world. I remember I used to hire cars every week, different cars, and used to put a lot of pressure on the person who used to get me the cars because I needed the latest number plates in town. I always warned her that if she did not get it, I would take my business elsewhere," he recounted.

With these hired vehicles, he would take the vehicle to a club, drink the entire night, take the car home and park it in there, then the next day, he would do the same every single day despite having to go to work in the morning.

One time, however, he recounted driving to work when the radio was playing and a Capital FM host identified as Waceke Nduati was talking about money.

"I used to hate it when I am listening to the radio and they stop playing music and someone starts talking. I was just about to switch channels when I heard what she was talking about was interesting," he recounted.

He told the gathering that the host that morning asked the listeners what would happen if they got to work to find a letter on their desks that their jobs had been terminated without warning.

This message, he stated, had him thinking about various scenarios in his head and the only thing that made sense to him at that time was to get into a financial class where he took lessons about managing money.

It was while he was in these classes that he learned about a concept referred to as non-financial assets, gifts that one has that are not financial in nature but rather talents and the harnessing of opportunities.

He narrated that he reached out to the network of individuals that he had been exposed to due to his position at the NGO, one of whom ended up granting him a consultancy job that earned him Ksh500,000 that same month.

His continued collaboration with his networks has seen him make millions through consultancy work and also through his current job as the Regional Communications Officer (East and Southern Africa) PATH, a nonprofit global health organization based in Seattle.

He also the founded LEMP (Living Effectively Mentorship Program), a leadership mentorship class, and also authored two highly acclaimed books alongside an illustrious career as a motivational speaker.

Waudo has worked as a communications analyst with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), a Regional Communications Officer and Communications Manager with Fintrac Inc.

Waudo revealed that he had bought a piece of land in Karen at Ksh11 million in 2019, where he was building a modern mansion complete with a lift, a gym, a sauna, a swimming pool.

In the video, he stated that he was looking to retire at around 2026 when he hits 45 years of age.
