A police officer in Nyandarua County was on Tuesday, March 3, caught red-handed stealing outside the Governor Francis Kimemia's office.

According to a report by Daily Nation, the unidentified police officer was allegedly in the process of disassembling a street light when his colleagues found him.

The street lights had been installed by an initiative that was funded by the World Bank.

Confirming the incident, county criminal investigations boss Eric Ochieng’ stated that upon investigations, they discovered that footprints at the scene of the crime matched with those of the suspect's shoes.

The officer is reported to have been heading a gang of thieves in Ol Kalou area of Nyandarua County.

Over the past year, cases of police officers going rogue have seemingly been on the rise leading to Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to hold a crisis meeting in October 2019.

In the meeting, Mutyambai unveiled new rules to govern the operations of police officers including a demand that they should not carry firearms while off-duty.

The meeting was ordered shortly after a group of police officers in Eastleigh area, Nairobi, were arrested after they were captured conducting a Ksh6 million robbery.

Six officers had reportedly robbed two businessmen who raised the alarm that caught the attention of law enforcers near BARWQO Lodge, 8th Street 2nd Av. Eastleigh.

Four suspects identified as Wilson Cheruiyot, Daniel Korir, Alex Kandie and Jean Baptist Esome out of the six suspects were arrested and Ksh3.5 million was recovered at the time.
