A showdown looms in Kirinyaga County between the County Assembly and the Executive.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a correspondent informed that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were looking into the assembly for suspected misappropriation of funds. This comes months after former Speaker David Githanda resigned in August 2019.

On Monday, March 16, 2020, the Kirinyaga County Assembly passed a motion abolishing Governor Anne Waiguru's Directorate of Liaison and Communications.

The MCAs claimed that the department was being used for personal interests rather than serving the residents and the county government.

Tebere Ward Representative Gudson Muchina, who tabled the motion, argued that staff attached to the communications department attacked MCAs on social media instead of on focusing on development matters.

He, therefore, advocated for it to be abolished and asked his colleagues to support the motion as well.

Baragwi MCA David Mathenge stated that, "Staff working there should be sent packing."

"The staff more often talk of development projects initiated by the devolved government which do not exist. We are not happy at all," he added.

The effect of the motion remains unclear since According to Section 46, 1 a of the County Governments Act, only the County Executive Committee can determine the organisation of the county departments.

On a positive note, the assembly allocated Ksh4 million for the mitigation of Coronavirus as counties continue to prepare in case of an outbreak.

The assembly resolved that all government offices, centres of worship and businesses be fitted with sanitizers for people to disinfect their hands.
