Kenya Railways Corporation has announced sweeping changes that will see timings between both the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the Nairobi Commuter Train altered.
In a notice on Friday, March 27, the changes will see the suspension of the direct Madaraka Express passenger service train from Nairobi to Mombasa.
The other routes that are set to be suspended are Nairobi-Suswa Service and Nairobi Terminus-Ngong Commuter Service.
SGR will also not make stopovers at Athi River, Emali, Mariakani and Masenyi route in a bid to reduce the risk of exposure of Covid-19.
Commuters who plan to travel to Mombasa or Nairobi using the SGR will now be forced to board the inter-county train.
The Nairobi Commuter Train will also change its evening timings to ensure passengers get to their destination on time.
Nairobi-Ruiru train will now depart at 4.20 p.m., Nairobi-Embakasi 5:20 p.m., Nairobi-Syokimau 5 p.m., and Nairobi-Kikuyu- 4.20 p.m.
The timings of the SGR inter-county train have been revised with both the departure from Nairobi and Mombasa terminus set at 10.30 a.m.
Madaraka Express has now combined the morning and afternoon services to comply with the 7 p.m. -5 a.m. curfew that is set to take effect on Friday, March 27.
Travellers who had pre-purchased SGR tickets will also be refunded in compliance with the government's directive that no more than 60% of seats should be filled to avoid the spread of the Coronavirus.
The trains will also be equipped with a separate isolation coach designated for passengers with a high fever.
Stations along the route will have a quarantine area where passengers having high fever will be placed.
Staff operating in the train were banned from travelling abroad from January, with those who had travelled before then required to have quarantined for 14 days.
