An irate mob in Githurai, Nairobi, engaged police in running battles on Sunday, March 29, and blocked off the busy Thika Superhighway during lunch hour

Gunshot rent the air as the police tried to quell the situation that was escalating.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a source in the area revealed that the residents were up in arms, accusing the police of killing several youth while enforcing mandatory 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew on Saturday night, March 28.

"I was at the market when the incident took place and after asking what the matter was, one of the traders told me that the police allegedly killed someone yesternight while enforcing the 7 p.m. curfew," the source stated.

The incensed mob took to the streets, with some taking advantage of the mayhem to rob bypassers, while others smashed stones into any car they came across.

Wellwishers took to social media to warn motorists plying the busy route to avoid falling victim to the rampaging mob.

"Avoid Thika road, Githurai. apparently three people were killed yesterday for loitering at night. The road has been blocked by rowdy youths and vehicles being smashed with stones," one user posted on Twitter.

The pressure is piling on the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to take concrete action after incidences of police brutality were recorded on the night of Friday, March 27, following a government curfew directive.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr, reacted with shock when he saw the video of police officers brutalising Mombasa residents way before the curfew hours were due on March 27.

"IG Mutyambai, this is exactly how the Coronavirus will or has spread! A stampede would have easily ensued. Social distance applies to your officers and their guns," he stated.
