Uhuru Surrenders His Office for Use in Fight Against Coronavirus

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto have surrendered their Nairobi offices for three months.

The offices will be used by the board managing Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund.

The president, on Wednesday, April 1, held a conference call with the 10-member board set up to marshal funds for combating the Coronavirus disease.

He exuded confidence that the team would bring renewed unity of purpose to the country against the war against the pandemic.

In addition, he assured the board which comprises of private sector captains of industry and senior state officials of his full support.

According to the publication of the Public Finance Management (Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund) Regulation by Treasury CS Ukur Yattani, the funds will be used to purchase essential supplies in the fight to control further spread of the viral disease.

Some of the purchases include; medical consumables, equipment, medicine, protective gear, quarantine facilities, Covid-19 test kits, food, water, electricity, medical disposal bins and provide logistics.

“The object and purpose of the fund shall be to mobilise resources for an emergency response towards containing the spread, effect and impact of Covid-19 pandemic,” reads the document.

In addition, the resources will be used to support small and medium enterprises that have been affected by the pandemic as well as old and poor persons living in urban informal settlements.

Part of the fund would also be used in facilities where that are being used for compulsory quarantine.

The regulations will pass through the National Assembly before they are enforced. So far, the senate has contributed Ksh 200 million of its budget towards the fund.
