While Kenyans were angered after their counterparts in China were forced to sleep in the streets, others in Nairobi were facing the predicament from their landlord.

This is after 16 families were forced to sleep on the streets in Kayole after their landlord evicted them, due to late payment of rent.

According to a report by NTV, the landlord is said to have asked the tenants to sleep on the streets.

"We spoke to the agent and asked him to give us time until the 13th but he still evicted us," one of the tenants complained.

"Right now, all my children are sleeping on the streets, I do not know what to do and the landlord has gone," another lamented.

"There is no time we have gone without paying rent. All of us usually pay by the 5th of every month," another stated.

The tenants requested the government to come to their rescue and help them plead with their landlord.

At the same time, another landlord in the area has waived rent for his tenants for the month of April and May.

"When we heard that he had waivered our rent, we were so happy," a tenant stated.

The two incidences came days after President Uhuru Kenyatta appealed to landlords to reduce rent for their tenants.

The head of state requested the landlords to emulate their counterparts who had already waived rent in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I am pleased to see Kenyans stepping up for each other in all our communities, I am pleased to see how Kenyans from all walks of life have responded and are contributing to help their brothers and sisters in need.

"Those property owners who have reduced or agreed to work terms for the monthly rent in order to provide roofs over the heads of vulnerable brothers and sisters and in this regard, I wish to urge all others to emulate this great example and not put our people in even more vulnerable situations as we face this current pandemic," the president stated.

"This is truly a time for compassion. This is truly a time for understanding," he added.
