The Centum Foundation has launched a mega-project to connect 10,000 families living in the Githogoro settlement area, Kiambu County, to clean tap water, and also donated foodstuff to 3,000 needy families in Nairobi and Kilifi County.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Centum Group CEO James Mworia, revealed that the unprecedented situation facing the country calls for Kenyans from all walks of life to chip in by lending a hand in whatever way they can.

“Centum’s goal is to ease the pain for thousands of Kenyans who are struggling to put a meal on the table at this difficult time, if we all come together, we’ll overcome this pandemic,” he stated.

Hinged on its vision to create sustainable programs that empower the community, the non-profit company embarked on its plan to connect 10,000 residents of the Githogoro settlement area, located along the Northern Bypass Road just before Two Rivers Mall.

Four 10,000-litre tanks and fifty 100-litre tanks are set to be installed in the massive project aimed at ensuring Githogoro residents all gain access to clean water and consequently improve hygiene standards, a key factor in curbing the spread of Covid-19.

CEO Mworia and his team led from the front, going on to aid in digging trenches that would be used to connect the households to clean water.

The food hampers (packaged to last the families for at least 2 weeks) for the 3,000 needy families whose livelihoods have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, was distributed in conjunction with the county governments as per the new government directive on donations.

Vipingo Development Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listed Centum Investment Company Plc., was also part of the initiative to help out the residents of the settlement area with foodstuff to alleviate the burden of the pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the livelihood of millions of people across the country and world at large mainly through business closures and economic shutdowns.

"The Covid-19 pandemic marks an unprecedented time in modern history that will require the best of humanity to overcome. Our contribution as Centum Foundation to this fund will support immediate and long-term relief and recovery in vulnerable communities during one of the most challenging times we have collectively faced," a statement from the foundation reads in part.

Established in 2016, the Centum Foundation has been at the heart of various community development and empowerment projects.

A good example being the Vipingo Scholarship Fund which was launched in January 2017, which has provided at least 50 scholarships per year to bright and needy students from Kilifi County.
