A woman who on April 1, 2020 was taken into quarantine at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nairobi has exposed details of sexual harassment that women have been experiencing at the facility.

*Rose Achieng' (not her real name) told Kenyans.co.ke how men have been banging on doors of rooms housing women at night, wanting to force there way into their rooms something that has them very worried.

''The security here is not good, men and women are in the same hostels, last night or early this morning men were banging on women's doors.

''We are scared since we do not know these people and if they rape or harm us and this it is not the first time this is happening. The government should let us go, we are negative and now our lives are in danger,'' she lamented.

The incidents have been reported to the managers of the faciltity but she says that no action has been taken to ensure their safety.

She further expressed her frustrations after being being separated from her family after flying back to Kenya for now more than three weeks.

''I have been here for 22 days yet I expected to be here for 14 days. I have strictly adhered to the rules of self-isolation and tested negative, why are we being punished because others have tested positive?" she wondered.

Rose went further to urge the government to put in measures for testing victims once they arrive at the quarantine facilities to help in tracking the number of days one has spent while in isolation.

''Why are people not tested when they are brought here so that we can start counting the 14 days immediately. There are people here who travelled from abroad on March 23, and are still here yet they are negative and nobody is in any rush to let them go home,'' she revealed.

*Stacy who has spent 31 days quarantine at the Kenya Institute of Water Management in South C, spoke to Kenyans.co.ke on conditition of anonymity, is facing a tough time with her essential supplies running out and having no money to restock.

''I had expected to pay Ksh28,000 for the 14 days that I would have been here but now I do not have the extra amount that I will be required to pay once I leave.

''I have no sanitary pads and other essentials such as toothpaste and soap as they've run out and I have nowhere to buy them from as there are no shops here. My family is in Kiambu and they can't travel to the city due the to the travel restrictions. I have spoke with the government spokesperson about getting us ladies sanitary pads and he said that he shall have something done.

She expressed how life in quarantine was hard on women and even wished that she was part of the 50 quarantined individuals who escaped from KMTC Nairobi.

''Life in quarantine is tough, some of the women here are having mental breakdowns. At least for me, my parents introduced me to boarding school at the age of four years, so it is not that hard for me but I wish that I could also escape this place as the others did. It is only my luggage that's keeping me here cause they are heavy,'' says Stacy who has been in quarantine since 23rd March 2020.

By the time of going to press, our attempts to reach Health CAS Dr Mercy Mwangangi for a comment on the claims made by these Kenyans on mandatory quarantined were futile as our calls went unanswered.
