Police officers on Thursday, April 23, tracked down one of the 50 individuals who escaped from the Kenya Medical Training Center (KMTC) quarantine facility to Bureti, Kericho.

The individual, Nelson Kiplangat, is said to have used a Public Service Vehicle from Nairobi to Kericho, despite the active order for cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi.

Kiplangat will be taken to Kapkatet Medical Training College, where, he will be quarantined for 14 days and tested for the Covid-19 disease.

He is said to have arrived in Kericho, from where he boarded a boda boda, which took him to his home in Tabaita village, Tiriitab Moita.

Area police commander Silas Gichunge stated that officers traced him to his home where he was arrested.

He later disclosed to the officers that there was yet another individual who was in Kericho from the KMTC quarantine centre. Officers have launched a manhunt for the other escapee.

Kiplangat's family members have been asked to quarantine for 14 days.

This came a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta vowed that all the 50 that had escaped quarantine would be traced, arrested and forced back into quarantine.

"Even those we saw escaping, we will get a hold of all of them and return them back to the centres.

"They will stay there until the period of quarantine is over. We know you and we will get a hold of you," the president promised.

More than 400 individuals who were arrested on Friday, April 17, for breaking curfew guidelines had been taken into forced quarantine.

The individuals are said to have lamented about the daily Ksh2,000 fee which they claimed they could not afford before 50 escaped.
