The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Thursday, April 23, closed the Narok-Mai Mahiu route and advised motorists to use alternative roads.
This is after the road was cut off at Siyabei, after the bridge collapsed following heavy rainfall.
"Due to the ongoing heavy rains, approaches to Siyiapei Bridge, approximately 17km from Narok towards Mai Mahiu have been severely undermined by floodwater, hence posing danger to motorists.
"The affected bridge is next to Maasai Mara Technical Institute," read an excerpt from a statement by KeNHA.
Motorists planning to use the said route are advised to use alternative routes.
The roads authority stated that a team was already on the ground working on the restoration of the road.
"Our team will work expeditiously to restore traffic on this important section. KeNHA shall keep motorists updated on the progress of these works," concluded the statement.
The route connects Nairobi to Narok, Bomet, Kisii, Luo Nyanza and Tanzania and is frequented by truck drivers.
The closure of the road will affect long-distance drivers who use the route to transport foodstuff to the above counties.
The Kenya Meteorological Department on Tuesday, April 21, warned that there would be an increase in the amount of rain in Nairobi and its environs. The rains pose a threat of possible flooding across the country.
"The heavy rainfall of more than 30mm in 24 hours which is being experienced over several parts of the country is expected to continue over the Western, the Central Region including Nairobi Area, North-Eastern, North-Western and Coastal Region of Kenya.
"In the western and Central region including the Nairobi Area, the rainfall intensity will progressively increase to 40mm in 24 hours between Thursday and Friday," Kenya Met warned.
