Deaths Reported After Boat Ferrying 18 Capsizes

Four people died and 14 others were rescued on Thursday, April 30, after a boat they were using capsized at Kerio River in Turkana.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a correspondent in Turkana County detailed that the passengers were from Alupet headed to Merieng, when the unfortunate incident took place.

"The boat was overloaded. There were 18 passengers, three motorbikes and six bundles of flour on the board," the journalist told our news desk.

He added that so far, two bodies have been recovered while two others were yet to be retrieved.

Turkana Deputy County Commissioner Alexander Mativo confirmed the incident and urged area residents to use life jackets while using the lake.

Further, he warned against overloading of the boats, saying it has caused the life of the four.

The incident took place two months after a boat capsized in Kanaola, Jomvu sub-county.

The boat is said to have crossed Tudor creek from Mombasa to Maunguja Voroni in  Kilifi county but capsized after it hit a wave.

The 10 people who had boarded the boat are said to have been thrown in the water but were lucky to survive.

Meanwhile, heavy rains have intensified in the country and the Kenya Meteorological Department warns that the rains will continue.

Many Kenyans have found themselves dealing with deadly floods and mudslides wreaked havoc in various parts of the country.

The weatherman also warned Kenyans in several counties including; Narok, Elgeyo Marakwet, and West Pokot to brace themselves for heavy rains.
