Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Tuesday, May 5, announced that the COVID-19 cases had risen to 535 after 45 cases tested positive in the last 24 hours.
Speaking from Afya House, the CS stated that this was the highest number of cases recorded in a single day since the first case was announced on March 13, 2020.
"Out of the 1,077 samples tested, 45 individuals tested positive," Mutahi stated.
Of the 45 cases, 30 are male while 15 are female.
In terms of case distribution in different counties, Mutahi stated that 29 individuals are from Nairobi, 11 from Mombasa and 5 from Wajir, of which, one is a Somali national. The five cases from Wajir are said to have a history of recent travel to Mogadishu
He added that all those who had tested positive in Nairobi are from Eastleigh.
"Age distribution of the new cases ranges from two years for the youngest and eighty-seven for the oldest," Mutahi disclosed.
Mutahi also stated that nine individuals had been discharged bringing the number of those who had recovered to 182.
So far, Mutahi stated that 63 individuals had tested positive for the virus in Eastleigh, 24 in Kawangware and 39 in Mombasa’s Old Town.
"There is community spread happening in Nairobi specifically in the estate of Eastleigh. This comes as a result of mass testing in Nairobi in the last 24 hours,'' he explained.
Kagwe stated that the government was in communication with the respective authorities in those areas so that necessary action could be taken to avoid the spread of the virus.
