West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo's on Wednesday, May 6, found himself at the mercy of nature's elements after his vehicle got stuck on a muddy road in his county.
The governor, while heading to Nyarkulian area in Pokot South Sub-county to resettle families that were affected by landslides late last year, found the route impassable and had to manoeuvre through.
"The roads are dilapidated and everyone including myself is getting stuck on this road," he exclaimed about the section of the Kapsait-Kapsangar-Sekution Road.
The county head was forced to alight and walk for several kilometres in the section where the road was still under construction and hence impassable.
He was accompanied by the Kenya Red cross Secretary-General Dr Aisha Mohammed and a number of government officials while heading to Nyarkulian area in Pokot South Sub County to resettle families that were affected by landslides late last year.
"This road is supposed to be fixed by the national government and so I'm appealing to the Minister for Roads and Public Works to increase funding for roads in this mountainous region," he stated arguing that some areas were completely inaccessible after a heavy downpour had affected the rains.
Erick Losiareng', a resident, explained that movement in the area had been greatly curtailed by the horrendous nature of the roads.
"Only tractors can pass here and boda bodas charge Ksh 300 for a journey of 2km," he stated adding that other vehicles had completely kept off the road.
Motorbike riders also found it difficult to navigate the muddy road which had trenches running in the middle of the road that escalates the risk of sliding and falling down.
The governor's convoy was able to make it through the section of the road with the help of bystanders who pushed the cars and an excavator which had been deployed to clear the road which was under construction.
He called on those living in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds as the rains are expected to continue.
