Anthony Ogallo, the elder brother of Market Milimani MCA Seth Kanga in Kisumu died on Monday, May 11, in police custody under mysterious circumstances.
Police claim that Ogallo died after trying to strangle himself at Kasagam Police Station and was transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to the police, Ogallo's wife Grace Achieng' reported that her husband had threatened to kill her with a machete after a domestic quarrel.
The woman fled, leaving Ogallo raging with anger as he proceeded to slash sheep in their homestead and destroying household items.
After Achieng' reported the matter to the police, officers moved to arrested Ogallo on grounds of threatening to kill the wife.
Speaking to the media, Kisumu East Sub County Police Commander James Musyim revealed how Ogallo met his death after his arrest.
"Later after an hour or so, is when we discovered the guy trying to strangle himself with his piece of cloth and the police tried to call for help from other officers who untied him.
"Quick action was taken to refer him to Jaramogi Hospital. After examination by medics, they confirmed that he had already passed on. So that is what happened and it is very unfortunate that it happened," he narrated.
The bereaved brother, however, suspected foul play in the death of his brother and denied the police report issued by Musyim.
"We are doubting that thesis of the police because they are saying that the brother committed suicide. They are not able to give us pictures claiming the brother committed suicide.
"They are claiming he died before 5 p.m. and they took him up to the hospital, the whole night, they did not take time to inform the wife who was the complainant that the husband who was arrested died under police custody.
The MCA added that proper communication could have been used immediately to alert the family about Ogallo's death.
"According to the wife, she was informed at 8:00 a.m in the morning. Even if the brother died, they could have used the National Government structures like the assistant chief to inform the family that the suspect who was arrested died under police custody.
"We went out of our normal business knowing that our brother is under police custody only to realise he had died.
"We are asking the DCI to take up this matter and investigate so that we may know the truth," urged the MCA.
Ogallo was also an employee of the Kisumu County Government as a teacher at Rotary Vocational and Training Center.
