Senator's Father Shot for Not Wearing Mask

UPDATE Tuesday, May 19: Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip disclosed the identity of the officer who allegedly shot his father as Officer Joseph Watila attached to Dol Dol Police Station.

In a statement to Kenyans.co.ke, he further noted that since the incident, his father, David Kiwaka, in a stable condition and recuperating well.

"This incident reminds us that we still have rogue officers within the police service. Innocent citizens have suffered a number of times under the officers who ought to protect them. Cases of unwarranted arrests, caning and the extent of shooting innocent civilians in the guise of enforcing Government regulations on Covid 19 are on the rise," stated the Senator.

Loitiptip disclosed that his father, David Kiwaka, was shot in the leg by an officer attached to Doldol Police Station in Laikipia County.

Kiwaka was reportedly accused of not wearing a face mask when the incident occurred on Sunday, May 17.

"My father, David Kiwaka, has been shot in the leg and brutally injured by police officers at Doldol Police Station, Laikipia County. He has been rushed to Nanyuki Cottage," stated the senator.

The angered senator called for speedy investigations into the matter to bring the officer responsible for the shooting arrested.

"I am currently in Nanyuki pursuing the matter. Justice must prevail for my father. That's why I am calling for speedy investigations and for the officer involved to be arrested," he added.

The information was first shared to the public by Sonko's daughter Saumu Mbuvi, wife to Loitiptip, through a social media post where she stated that her father-in-law had been shot by a police officer.

Saumu disclosed that the incident occurred in broad daylight as the officers attempted to arrest him.

“They shot my father-in-law today, yet it was still daytime! Police brutality must stop…Every day we get cases of them shooting innocent citizens and nothing is being done…it is time this ends.

"Police brutality must and should stop! We are tired. Stop taking advantage of your power to intimidate innocent citizens,” stated Saumu Mbuvi.
