There is a new twist in the Sunday, May 17, shooting incident involving Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip's father in which his leg was injured.
In an interview with Daily Nation on Tuesday, May 19, Laikipia County Police Commander Maxwell Nyaema disclosed that the father, David Kiwaka, had reportedly triggered the police to shoot him.
He explained that the officers were on an assignment to arrest a suspect accused of assaulting his wife and that Kiwaka was part of a group that allegedly attempted to protect the man.
The matter got out of hand when Kiwaka reportedly stabbed one of the officers and was aiming at the next officer when he was shot.
"When he attempted to stab another officer, he was shot on the right leg," stated the commander.
Kenyans.co.ke attempted to reach out to Senator Loitiptip for a comment on the development, hours after he told our newsdesk how his father had been brutalised but he was unreacheable on phone.
Two people were injured in the incident and were taken to Doldol Sub-County Hospital before being transferred to the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke earlier on Tuesday, Loitiptip stated that that besides the gunshot wound on the leg, his father had suffered injuries to his head inflicted by the butt of an officer's gun.
"This incident reminds us that we still have rogue officers within the police service. Innocent citizens have suffered a number of times under the officers who ought to protect them.
"Cases of unwarranted arrests, caning and the extent of shooting innocent civilians in the guise of enforcing government regulations on Covid 19 are on the rise," stated the Senator.
In earlier media reports, the senator had claimed that his father had been shot for not wearing a face mask.
"My father, David Kiwaka, has been shot in the leg and brutally injured by police officers at Doldol Police Station, Laikipia County. He has been rushed to Nanyuki Cottage," stated the senator.
The angered senator called for speedy investigations into the matter to ensure the officer responsible for the shooting was arrested.
"I am currently in Nanyuki pursuing the matter. Justice must prevail for my father. That's why I am calling for speedy investigations and for the officer involved to be arrested," he added.
