Five people were killed while several others sustained injuries in a grisly road accident on Saturday, May 23, where a lorry is reported to have rammed into several vehicles at the Londiani Junction in Kericho County.
Confirming the incident, Londiani OCPD Musa Kongoli disclosed that the lorry driver lost control before ramming into a matatu that was heading in the opposite direction.
The truck that was heading towards Kericho from Nakuru, hit other vehicles in the crash.
"It is sad that we have lost five people in this accident. Two women and three men. Most of the casualties were in the matatu. The truck driver sustained injuries and has been taken to hospital," Kongoli was quoted by the Nation
Earlier on the Standard reported that three fatalities had been reported in the crash.
“It appears the lorry driver lost control of his vehicle and hit the oncoming motorists. Three died on the spot,” Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement officer Rashid Ali, was quoted by the publication.
Eyewitnesses at the scene rushed to the site to assist those injured in the crash which occurred at around 11 am.
The injured, 12 in number, according to the OCPD were rushed to various hospitals in Kericho for emergency treatment.
The junction has been described as a blackspot with many accidents occurring in the area.
Londiani OCPD Joseph Odipo in a previous interview noted that the road is sloppy and has sharp bends.
"Many accidents have occurred in this area. It is a known black spot where speeding, overtaking, and careless driving are the major causes of accidents," Odipo stated.
