Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on June 1, re-advertised 1,498 job vacancies in a recruitment exercise that had been suspended in March, 2020.
The county government is looking for 800 county constables, 200 firefighters, and 498 early childhood development and education (ECDE) caregivers.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Jacob Elkana, the director of communications at the governor's press office, explained that the initial recruitment exercise had been derailed by the breakout of the Covid-19 pandemic as the county diverted its resources to handling the situation.
"All measures required by health officials have been put in place in this new recruitment process," he stated.
The new deadline for applications was set for June 8, with governor Sonko stating, "Those who had applied earlier need not re-apply."
Basic salaries of jobs on offer in the security and compliance; disaster management and coordination sector and the education sector range between Ksh14,910 and Ksh28,970.
Sonko further announced that the application requirements, duties, responsibilities, terms of employment and remuneration details could be obtained from the Nairobi City County Public Service Board online recruitment portal.
"Applications should be scanned and sent in pdf format to cpsb@nairobi.go.ke. Manual applications will be accepted. Applicants should be Kenyan citizens and should provide clearance certificates from KRA, CRB and a Certificate of Good Conduct from the Kenya Police Service during the interview," the notice read in part.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already had adverse social and economic implications with preliminary data from different sectors showing that at least 342,300 jobs have been lost in the last two months.
The situation is expected to get even worse, with President Uhuru Kenyatta during his Labour Day address, on May 1, warning that over half a million Kenyans could lose their jobs in the next six months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to a Kenya National Burial of Statistics (KNBS) report, a majority of Kenyans are likely to find jobs in the informal sector as 2020 advances.
"With the shrinking job creation in the formal sector, the majority of the youth who exit from learning institutions and individuals who leave formal employment easily join the informal sector," KNBS informed.
