Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen questioned President Uhuru Kenyatta after convening 212 politicians in a Jubilee Party Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday, June 2.
Murkomen asked why churches, mosques and other religious places of worship are yet to be opened if a large meeting can take place in State House.
"212 politicians assembled today in SH (State House) to do their thing with masks and social distance. How is it impossible to open churches, mosques, temples etc with similar protocols," wrote Murkomen.
The former Majority Senate Leader was replying to a tweet by State House that uploaded images of the Group Meeting.
The 212 politicians who attended the high profile meeting were donned in masks and observed the one-meter social distancing rule.
Aside from the 212 Members of Parliament, the meeting was also graced by Deputy President William Ruto who is also the Jubilee Coalition's Deputy Party Leader as well as Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju.
Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Sunday, March 22 ordered the immediate closure of all places of worship in Kenya.
There has been divided opinion on the issue of churches reopening amid growing calls by church leaders to resume services.
During his Madaraka Day speech, Uhuru announced that he had directed Interior CS Fred Matiang'i and Health CS Mutahi Kagwe to hasten talks with religious leaders, that would see churches resume.
"I direct the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Health to continue and hasten their engagement with religious leaders," stated the president.
There were a number of changes effected during the meeting with the Majority Whip Benjamin Washiali being replaced by Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe.
Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya was also appointed to serve as the inaugural Jubilee Coalition Joint Parliamentary Group Leader.
