A Member of the County Assembly in Migori has reportedly gone missing after coming into contact with a positive Covid-19 patient who escaped from the Makalda isolation center.

According to a report by The Standard, police officers launched a manhunt for the lawmaker accusing her of avoiding testing and putting those in contact with her at risk.

Confirming the incident, Health Chief Officer Iscar Oluoch told the press that the unidentified lawmaker switched off her phone to avoid being traced by the officers and health officials.

The MCA allegedly came into contact with the patient who tested positive on Saturday, May 30.

"It is sad that we have a leader who instead of leading in fighting the virus, is putting others at risk. We are still tracking her.

"This is the first time a patient has escaped from the treatment center," stated Oluoch.

The Ministry of Health has experienced challenges in curbing the virus by confining suspects in an isolation center some of whom have managed to escape on numerous occasions.

In April, the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) saw 50 of the people who were quarantined at the facility escape, posing risk to the greater population.

At the time, the individuals lamented of the daily Ksh2,000 fee which was being charged.

Since then, the state has experienced increased challenges in containing the growing numbers, especially under limited resources.

It also emerged that some individuals who have tested positive for the virus have been providing false contact information, making the tracing process more daunting.

Currently, positive Covid-19 cases stand at 2,216 with a spike in numbers in recent weeks, after the government expanded its testing capacity.

74 people have since succumbed to the virus.
