The Senate Business Committee has recommended that the Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s impeachment be discussed by a sitting of 11 Senators.

The recommendation made on Friday, June 12 is subject to approval by the plenary on Tuesday, 16, 2020.

There has been a debate over how the Senate should handle the impeachment.

If the House Business Committee’s recommendation is adopted, the fate of the governor will be in the hands of the 6 senators who will be part of the 11-member team.

The committee will be subjected to a vote and the majority (6) will either chose to uphold her impeachment or squash it.

The committee

Jubilee - Gideon Moi (Baringo), Beth Mugo (nominated), Anwar Oloitiptip (Lamu), Mohamed Muhammud (Mandera), Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi) and Abshiro Halaqe (nominated).

Nasa - Cleophas Malala (Kakamega), Beatrice Kwamboka (nominated), Judith Pareno (nominated), Moses Kajwang (Homa Bay) and Enoch Wambua (Kitui)

Four factors are expected to play out in the house, where she will be given a chance to make an address before a vote is called.

Her stand for BBI

She stood up against Punguza Mzigo and declared it dead on arrival in Mt. Kenya long before anybody knew what was happening.

In supporting BBI she drummed support for the women agenda and given how the country is going she has been a formidable voice for the women in the country.

She has been leading the delegation of women who have called for equality in the BBI.

Her rise in the region

Her rise to one become of the most popular leaders in Mt Kenya has unsettled many politicians in the region.

Before she had been being considered Ruto's running mate and now a key contender for the five positions available in the new government that will be created in the BBI.

“I have at least two offers for the deputy president position but this is not the right time to name the parties,” she said in an exclusive interview with the Nation in 2019.

Her newfound alliance with Odinga

Being close to former Prime Minister was a strategic move for her and this would put her squarely as a Jubilee Party member and a darling to ODM.

Her rivals will have a tall order to outmatch her supporters as she enjoys favour from both the ruling party and the opposition.

As part of the truce with the former Prime Minister, Ms Waiguru campaigned for ODM candidate Imran Okoth during the recent Kibra by-election and has now become a regular visitor to Mr Odinga’s Capitol Hill office in Nairobi.

Her exit from Tangatanga

She is seen to have championed Uhuru's agenda in the region. Tangatanga could be hitting back at her to get to the president due to the recent purge in Jubilee party.

A number of politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto have been attacking the governor after she declared loyalty to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, Ruto's allies' influence in the Senate was put to the test during the shake-up of the house leadership.
