Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang, on Tuesday, June 16, slammed his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart for raising issues he classified as unfit for the House.
"I now understand why some political parties need to have parliamentary group meetings and I urge my colleagues not to take this House for a ride.
"The issues that my colleagues are raising in this House are matters that should be addressed in Parliament Group Meetings," he quipped in response to Senator Murkomen's statement.
The Elgeyo Marakwet Senator had raised a point of order and used the opportunity to air his frustrations over the removal of Jubilee Party Senators from their roles in the House.
"Five members of the jubilee party were taken through a disciplinary process for decisions that were made in this House. We live in unprecedented times, In my eight years of service in the Senate, no member has ever been disciplined because of their stand in any matter transacted on the floor of this house.
"The deputy speaker was removed from this house because of rulings he made in this house.
"Mr Speaker some of my colleagues have been sent SMSs all over the weekend because they are nominated. I will name them if necessary. We do not want another charade to ensue, when it comes to a matter as important as the impeachment of a governor, where senators are going to receive letters to be removed from committees," Murkomen detailed.
He went on to claim that he had credible information to prove that Mandera Senator Mohamed Maalim Mohamud, who was also serving as the chairman of finance in the Senate, was removed from his position because of his stand regarding the people of North Eastern Kenya on matters finance.
However, Senator Kajwang jumped in, after his counterpart ignored several calls to order by the Speaker Kenneth Lusaka, and urged the House to focus on national issues under its mandate.
"Mr Speaker there are those who said this House is dead, they are the same ones who presided over the death. They should not be here for the burial.
"The elders said that only a foolish fly follows the carcass to the grave. I kindly ask that we go back to substantive issues," Senator Kajwang asserted.
This was a reference to statements made by Senator Murkomen in April 2020, when he claimed that Parliament was dead, adding that it was just an extension of the Executive arm of government.
His startling remarks came in the wake of an article published by the Standard that branded Kenyan politicians as traitors for abandoning the electorate during the coronavirus pandemic.
“For the 1st time, Standard has boldly called out my colleague Senator Moi & his brother. I hope they were quoted in the story. I can, however, confirm that Parliament is dead. It’s an extension of Executive & the opposition is causing stampede trying to be more government than the government itself,” Murkomen Tweeted.
