Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has raised concerns over the spike in coronavirus cases in the County following the lifting of the cessation of movement by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kingi was speaking on Tuesday, June 16, during a press briefing and was alarmed with a new wave of infections of the deadly virus reported in the county.

On Monday, June 15, the county recorded seven positive cases, one of the highest numbers in the area since the pandemic hit the country.

President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the cessation of movement order on Saturday, June 6 in Kilifi and Kwale after previously recording low numbers.

"Today, our county has been hit hard by this deadly virus with a total of 34 confirmed cases in the last month. Out of the 34 cases, 32 are held in our isolation centres while the remaining 2 are under home-based quarantine.

"It is heartbreaking that the rise in the number of cases in our county is attributed to the many cases of indiscipline by our people," noted Kingi.

The Governor was also concerned by residents letting their guard down and failing to adhere to the health directives, which consequently led to an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the County. Of those seven, three were Kilifi residents while four were residents of Kaseneli area Kwale.

With the implementation of home-based care by the Ministry of Health, two cases from the county were enrolled into the program.

Kilifi North has so far recorded 11 cases while Kilifi South has 2 cases, Rabai recorded 18 while Kaloleni Sub County has 2 cases.

Kingi added that the county would continue to combat the disease from all fronts and would work hand in hand with the National Government.

"As a county government, we can not relent in the fight against Covid-19 and we will continue to collaborate fully with the National Government in enforcing all health guidelines to curb the spread of this virus," he stated.
