Dr Gor Goody,  the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Central Region branch secretary, on Tuesday, June 23, appeared before the special senate committee during Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru impeachment hearing.

While testifying, the doctor laid out statements that painted a grim picture of the health sector in Waiguru's County.

From the moment she took the stand, her credibility as a witness was questioned by the 11 senators selected to oversee the impeachment motion of the Kirinyaga Governor.

However, she stood her ground: “I’m here to speak on the dilapidated healthcare system in Kirinyaga and on behalf of the 457 health workers who were fired,” she asserted.

She then went on to detail several issues regarding her relationship with Waiguru.

"I have never had a chance to sit down with the CEO of Kirinyaga County to discuss health matters. When you employ a specialist and you don’t take their advice you are doing a disservice to yourself, that person and the community in general," she revealed.

She went on to claim that the doctor-patient ratio in Kirinyaga County stood at 1:30,000 - which is almost double the figure quoted by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita when he was defending a deal that brought 100 Cuban doctors to work in Kenya.

"To be a surgeon in Kirinyanga, you have to be a snake wrangler first," she stated during the hearing.

Dr Goody, who holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery, was the one who led threats to withdraw doctors from the Kerugoya Referral Hospital in Kirinyaga County due to the facility’s deplorable state in May 2019.

She led a five-kilometre march to the Governor's office but was repulsed by police officers who were forced to lock up Waiguru's office, to prevent the agitated group from forcing its way into the offices.

“We have written many letters to the county government but we are yet to get a reply on our call for dialogue, that is why we came to the county to be addressed by Waiguru but no one has heeded our call,” she stated at the time.

The doctor was cross-examined by the various Senators who all questioned her credibility as a witness, but she maintained that her role as the KMPDU head in the Central Region, granted her the authority to present her statement regarding an issue that affected all the residents in Kirinyaga County.
