Baringo Senator Gideon Moi on Monday, July 6, handed Malawi's new president H.E Lazarus Chakwera 4 well-crafted gifts to mark his inauguration.

Fitted in a wooden-oak box with a black velvet interior casing, the senator presented a golden flask, two golden lapels, a golden notebook and pen to match.

All items were emblazoned with the KANU insignia as well as the name of the Malawian President.

Senator Moi had led a Kenyan delegation to the inauguration of President Chakwera at Kamuzu Barracks.

The two leaders went on to hold private talks at President Chakwera's new office where Senator Moi delivered President Uhuru Kenyatta's message to the new president.

According to Malawi press, the two also held bilateral talks in a bid to strengthen ties between the two nations, with Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ababu Namwamba joining them for the discussions.

On the day slated for President Chakwera's inauguration, Kenya's social media platforms were abuzz with claims that the KANU Chairman and COTU boss Francis Atwoli, who was part of the Senator's delegation were left stranded at an airport in Malawi.

However, this was established to be fake news, with the photo of Atwoli that was doing rounds on social media doctored to suit the narrative.

President Uhuru's decision to delegate the task of representing the country at the high ranking continental meeting to Baringo Senator has been interpreted, by political pundits, as a move to groom him for a top seat in 2022.

Other members of Gideon Moi's special delegation were Kanu Secretary-General Nick Salat, and the recently appointed Senate Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio.

Notably, President Chakwera's Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Moi's KANU share a long history, with both being independence parties of their respective countries.

The new Malawian President was among dignitaries who attended the funeral of former President Daniel Arap Moi on February 12, 2020.

President Chakwera and the Baringo Senator are said to be bosom friends, with Tiaty MP William Kamket affirming this and adding that they share political ideologies as well.

The Malawian Head of State garnered 58.57% of votes cast against incumbent Mutharika’s 39% in the repeat poll.
