President Uhuru Kenyatta reportedly grounded his Cabinet Secretaries and barred them from travelling across the country after reports of three CSs contracting Covid-19 emerged. The three CSs are reportedly under self-isolation.
"The President ordered that the trips be halted for two weeks as part of curbing the spread of Covid-19," a source detailed in an interview with the Standard.
Several CSs have been touring the country, launching development projects after the head of state delegated the duty to the Executive.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, ICT's Joe Mucheru. Health CS Mutahi Kagwe and Treasury CS Ukuru Yattani were forced to cut short their tours following Kenyatta's directive. Kagwe had embarked on county tours to assess the preparedness against Covid-19.
Executives, Eugene Wamalwa (Devolution), James Macharia (Transport) and John Munyes (Petroleum and Mining) were also grounded after they commissioned the tarmacking of the historical 15 KM Gisambai - Hamisi - Shamakhokho road.
Another source added that the Cabinet had taken a break to focus on decisions put on the table for Kenyatta during a crisis meeting held on Monday, July 20.
The President convened the meeting following an upsurge in Covid-19 infections in the country with 44 out of 47 counties recording positive cases.
The Executive will reportedly hold another meeting on Friday, July 24 to discuss the escalating crisis facing the nation. As of Tuesday, July 21, Kenya recorded 14,168 Covid-19 cases, with 250 fatalities and 6, 258 recoveries.
President Kenyatta had earlier on enforced several measures after State House officials contracted the virus. Kenyatta relocated to his Harambee House and chose to have virtual meetings save for sensitive intelligence briefs.
State Hous Spokesperson Kanze Dena had not yet responded to questions asked by Kenyans.co.ke on CSs contracting Covid-19 and the decision by Kenyatta to bar them from countrywide tours by the time of publishing.
