On her part, Kirinyaga Woman Rep Purity Ngirici noted that the nation would preserve Okoth's legacy for having served Kibra residents diligently.

"If there’s a mantra Mheshimiwa left behind is that ; There’s honour In serving Wanjiku," she stated.

Okoth passed on aged 41 at the Nairobi Hospital, having been diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer.

Other notable individuals who also succumbed to cancer in 2019 include; Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso and Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.

On Friday, July 3, the Ministry of Health launched a cancer Policy to address the growing burden of the disease in the country.

During the daily covid-19 briefings, Health CAS Dr. Rashid Aman disclosed that through Managed Equipment Service (MES), the Ministry had availed x-ray, CT-SCAN equipment, ultrasound and mammography machines, to the counties to boost cancer diagnosis.

He added that the Ministry had put in place deliberate efforts to improve access to cancer services in line with the Universal Health Coverage agenda.

He assured that the Ministry was supporting the centers with appropriate cancer drugs, especially during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure continued service delivery.

“This means that basic cancer care can now be accessed at a nearby county health facility and I am urging our cancer patients, on active treatment as well as those on follow up, to embrace and utilize these services,” he stated.
