Sakaja's Replacement Announced in Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Covid-19

UPDATE: Nominated Senator Sylvia Kasanga on Wednesday, July 29, replaced Senator Johnson Sakaja as chairperson of Senate Covid-19 committee.

Kasanga previously served as the Vice-Chair of the Ad hoc Committee on the Covid-19 situation in Kenya.

She has previously served as a member in the Ad hoc Committee that investigated the Solai Dam tragedy.

"It is with great humility that I humbly thank the Senate Ad hoc Covid-19 Response Committee for deeming me fit, to assume leadership as their Chairperson. This honour comes at a time when the response against the pandemic is at its peak, and when infections are on a steep rise," Kasanga stated.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja was on Tuesday July 28, replaced in the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Covid-19 Situation in Kenya.

Speaking in the Senate, Majority Whip Senator Irungu Kang'ata announced that Sakaja, who had resigned from the committee, would be replaced by Bomet Senator Christopher Andrew Lang'at.

"Pursuant to Standing Order 187 and 189, the senate approves the appointment of Senator Christopher Andrew Lang'at to replace Sentaor Sakaja in the Ad-hoc Committee on Covid-19 Situation in Kenya," he stated.

Kang'ata further stated that the Bomet Senator would lend his expertise to the committee and would be a valuable member.

"He will bring the dimension of the Covid-19 situation in the Rift Valley region which needs good representation to enrich deliberations in the committee," the Murnag'a Senator added.

Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja has officially tendered his resignation as chairman of the Senate Ad hoc committee on Covid-19 effective July 20.

Sakaja made the announcement after presenting himself at Kilimani Police Station to be booked after apparently going missing following his arrest on Friday, July 17.

Sakaja was arrested for flouting Covid-19 regulations after he was found drinking at an establishment identified as Ladies Lounge along Dennis Pritt Road in Nairobi at 1 a.m.

Speaking at the police station, Sakaja stated that he was taking responsibility for his actions and reiterated that everyone was capable of making mistakes.
