UPDATE Sunday, August 2: Samburu County Government faulted the Ministry of Health for reporting that the County had recorded a positive Covid-19 case.
In his address at Samburu County Referral Hospital in Maralal town, Governor Moses Lenolkulal disclosed that the one case did not originate from Samburu.
“The case is not actually from Samburu, it is not among the samples that we sent to Nairobi, from reliable sources the contact has been traced to Forole in Marsabit and there is no cause for alarm," he stated.
Kenya has recorded 727 more Covid-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of cases in the country to 21,363.
During the daily Covid-19 briefing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Saturday, August 1, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe announced that 6,371 samples had been tested over the same period.
Of the 727 positive cases, 465 are male and 262 are female while the youngest case is one year old and the oldest is aged 92.
At the same time, 254 patients have been discharged from hospital bringing the total recoveries to 8,419.
"88 people are from home-based care treatment while 166 have been released from various hospitals," Kagwe announced.
Regrettably, 23 patients succumbed to the disease bringing the total death toll to 364. Of the 23, Kagwe disclosed that a 16-year-old had lost their life.
“We are increasingly seeing younger people passing away. People should stop socializing and gathering,” he advised.
The CS lamented that Nairobi was still the hotspot for the virus with 470 cases and Kiambu following closely with 64.
"We took PPEs to Kiambu county yesterday (Friday). Kiambu is in that state and needs national government support due to the number of deaths and cases,” Kagwe stated.
The distribution of cases in other counties is as follows; Kajiado (25), Kirinyaga (20), Mombasa (16), Migori (15), Busia (13), Machakos (12), Laikipia (11) and others.
On his part, Transport CS James Macharia announced that several planes had already left the country to London, Heathrow, Dubai, Addis Ababa, Kigali and Dakar, Senegal. At the same time, he stated that Kenya Airways, British Airways, KLM from Amsterdam were expected to arrive the country on Sunday night.
Despite the resumption of flights, Kagwe urged Kenyans to avoid unnecessary travel .
"I appeal to port health officers to undertake the duty with respect and concern. We must find a way of resuming economic activities knowing COVID is here with us,” he stated.
