Former K24 TV anchor and Managing Editor, Kiswahili, Franklin Wambugu has been appointed a Chief Officer in Kiambu County barely a year after exiting the Mediamax-owned TV station.
Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke on Monday, August 10, the journalist revealed that he had been appointed as the newest chief officer in charge of Communications and Public Relations.
He further revealed that the appointment was made two weeks ago but the induction of the new appointees took place over the whole of last week.
"I am here to showcase what Kiambu County has to offer in terms of service delivery especially with it being the second-most populus county and attracts a lot interest.
"I am not going there to reinvent the wheel. I am going to work with people who are very talented," stated Wambugu.
He further revealed that he was looking forward to importing his 20-year experience from the media industry into his newest assignment.
"I have worked in the media for close to 20 years. I will bring my experience from the media sector and will work together with the officers at the County," he added.
Wambugu was among 160 Mediamax Network Limited employees who received termination letters, a month after the Kijabe Street-based media company gave notice of mass firings in October 2019.
The lay off involved some of the institution's highly salaried workers as well as all editors and senior news reporters.
They included News Anchor Mwanaisha Chidzuga, Deputy Managing Editor, Ali Mtenzi, Head of Sports, Torome Tirike, Tony Timase (Head of Business) and Senior Reporter Franklin Macharia.
According to the job's description on the county's website, Wambugu will be tasked with taking care of professional, administrative and operational matters relating to public communications in the entire county.
Other tasks include formulation, implementation and co-ordination of Information and Public Communication policies, programme strategies and design of appropriate programmes as well as advising on Information and Public Communications issues.
At Mediamax, Wambugu served as Managing Editor and Kiswahili Chief Anchor. He previously worked for Citizen TV as a news editor for 9 years.
