Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Ngirici took over road projects in Kirinyaga County, alleging that Governor Anne Waiguru's administration had let down its constituents.
On Tuesday, August 11, through her social media pages, Ngirici argued that the county was facing a poor road network despite Governor Anne Waiguru laying down a manifesto during her campaigns in 2017.
The Jubilee Woman Representative added that she was motivated by the outcry of residents on stalled projects in the county.
"I have received more letters and calls about poor county roads than about anything else given that I have become the person they pass all their letters onto for my response. It is now over three years since the county government took over and our roads are still dilapidated.
"Even though my scope of work and government resources do not extend to road maintenance, I don’t mind – that’s why I came into leadership, to deal with some of the problems that matter to people’s everyday lives," she posted on Facebook.
Ngirici, married to Mt Kenya billionaire Andrew Ngirici disclosed that she released plant equipment from her firm to Mwea, Kirinyaga central and Gichugu constituencies to take over road maintenance and construction.
She added that she had initiated the projects in the aforementioned constituencies in 2015, covering over 60% of county roads within 2 years.
After the 2017 elections, the plan was withdrawn to give Waiguru's regime time and space to deliver on their mandate.
Waiguru and Ngirici are arch-rivals set to battle for the 2022 gubernatorial seat. In January 2020, Waiguru warned Ngirici to desist from early campaigns in Kirinyaga County.
The Women Representative has, however, remained vocal on matters Kirinyaga County and has clashed with several Jubilee leaders on her stand as an anti-Waiguru proponent.
Kirinyaga County officials had not responded to Ngirici's decision to take over road projects by the time of going to press.
