Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Tuesday, August 18 shed light on a nationwide competition to award the cleanest police stations in the country.

The CS revealed that three of the cleanest police stations around the country would have Officers Commanding Stations (OCS) promoted automatically.

The competition is set to be an annual one, with the dirtiest police stations also set to face punishment with the possibility of firing being discussed.

Matiang'i explained how the competition would be rolled out across the country and how the top three police stations would be arrived at.

"Every region at the end of the year will have an inspection team that will inspect every police station in their region and identify the three cleanest and best police stations.

"This will give us a total of 24 police stations which will be inspected by a team from Headquarters to give us the three cleanest police stations in the country," he noted.

Matiang'i admitted that police stations around the country need a face-lift, with old cars packed in their compounds to be disposed.

The former Education CS also urged stakeholders to contribute in improving police stations, citing how companies in Mombasa have taken a personal initiative to revamp stations by installing water tanks and distributing masks.

He also narrated the sorry state of a police station in Isiolo County which was built during the colonial era and is still in use.

"I went to Isiolo police station, it was built in the ‘50s or probably before, I was telling IG how you can see through the cracks while inside.

"Its not right that we live that way, I know that resources are a challenge but we can work and try to improve the manner in which we do business," he stated.
