A Standard Eight pupil and her mother have embarked on voluntarily fixing potholes along the Njoro-Molo Road in Elburgon, Nakuru County.
Using tools designed to till soil, the mother and daughter hack away at the tarmac, their heads drooping dangerously close to passing cars and speeding boda bodas.
A 4-year-old boy holds up a red polythene bag at the end of a long stick to alert motorists to ongoing 'roadworks', just to keep his family safe.
Ruth Wambui, a mother of five, told journalists that she decided to tag her daughter along to prevent her from engaging in risky behaviour.
"In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, I decided to tag my daughter along when fixing this road because when I leave her at home, she is at risk of harmful influences," Wambui stated.
Wambui and her daughter have since requested Molo MP Kuria Kimani to consider her and other casual labourers for a job on the rehabilitation on the road.
Residents in the area have decried what they described as leaders abandoning their duty to improve the infrastructure in the area.
"We elected leaders in this area but we still wonder why they do not repair the dilapidated roads as well as ensure that there is sufficient water supply in the area," one John Mwangi lamented.
"Every time after an election, the leaders disappear and only come back when they need our votes," he added.
In July 2020, Kimani apologised to the residents due to the dilapidated road and promised to aid in its repair. At the time, Kimani argued that there were some procedures that needed to be followed for the repair to begin.
"The residents elected me so that I could help any time a problem arised...when the construction of the road begins, women and the youth in this area will be the first to get the opportunity," he assured residents.
In a previous interview in August 2020, a resident in Elburgon narrated an instance in which he saw a man die while heading to hospital due to the impassable road.
"This road has caused us sorrow especially at this time when rain is pounding hard. Recently, I witnessed a sick man who was being taken to hospital get dropped because of poor roads.
"The road has a lot of portholes. On another occasion, a lorry nearly fell on traders after it lost control on this bad roads," he stated.
He added that the discussion on the construction of the road had been ongoing between the county and the national government for a number of years.
