Two brothers reportedly drowned in a shallow dam in Athi River, Mavoko sub-county, on Sunday, October 4.

Ndabaramiye Jacques, a 9-year-old and his brother Reponses Byicyaza, 7-year-old, are said to have gone missing on Sunday before their clothes were found on Monday, at the dam.

According to their father, Semaringa Jacques, the two had been left with their siblings at home as their parents went for a church service at Light of Hope International.

After arriving from church he realised that the children were missing, and mobilised neighbours to help with their search.

"We got to the dam and found their clothes and shoes at the banks and feared for the worst," Jacques stated.

Police have since launched investigations into the matter.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government urged parents to be on high alert on the whereabouts of their children, asking them to monitor what children were consuming online, take responsibility and be more accountable for their children's welfare.

The incident came a month after a father from Kinoo area, Kiambu County, lost his two children who fell into a manhole filled with water.

The children are said to have been playing when they wandered into a construction site and accidentally fell in the dam.

Residents in the area urged the government to take action against the site management for what they termed as carelessness.
