A man in Kitengela stabbed his wife to death before turning the knife on himself in an incident that shocked residents.

Timothy Weru,35, reportedly killed his 23-year-old wife Miriam Nyakaro on Sunday afternoon, October 11, after he lured her to their rental house.

The two are said to have been living separately for weeks leading to the incident.

Relatives who spoke to the media stated that the two had a tumultuous marriage, something that saw them go their separate ways every so often.

According to the neighbours, a commotion ensued just moments after the woman, who operated an M-Pesa shop in the area, arrived at their single room at around mid-day.

The two are said to have fought prompting the woman to attempt to escape, but was pursued by the husband who hit her on the head with a hammer.

The man is said to have stabbed the wife as neighbours watched helplessly, killing her.

He reportedly threatened those who attempted to intervene before slitting his own throat open with a kitchen knife.

Cases of domestic violence across the country have increased significantly as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

According to women’s rights campaigners, the restrictions have fueled an upsurge in gender-based violence across the world, with women and girls more isolated and vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

In July, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an investigation into rising reports of violence against women and girls.

The president said he was concerned by "increasing tensions" within the home, noting that gender-based violence had increased since the government issued strict measures to curb the deadly virus.
