Sports CS Amina Mohammed has commissioned the construction of the historic Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County.

This came just days after President Uhuru Kenyatta opened the renovated Nyayo Stadium on September 26. The CS noted that the national government had given Kiambu County Government Ksh596 million for the project.

The Kirigiti Stadium is considered historic as it had been used by Kenya's first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to hold functions in the area.

Mzee Kenyatta held his last rally on the ground just before the state of emergency was declared by the colonialists in 1954.

Former President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga held their last rally while campaigning for the adoption of the 2010 Constitution at the same grounds.

CS Amina gave the county government 6 months to complete the stadium.

"We have given him (Kiambu governor) the resources needed, totalling about Ksh596 million to complete the project. The money has been ring-fenced and therefore there is no reason for delays," the CS stated.

Once completed the stadium will have a capacity to host 16,000 fans, and will be built to international standards.

The venue is expected to play host to sporting activities including athletics, football, basketball and volleyball and will also feature a police station.

The Head of State and his Deputy William Ruto, have faced criticism over their promise to upgrade and construct stadiums.

President Kenyatta is expected to launch 9 stadiums before the end of his term in 2022.

"We are currently at the process of completing Jamhuri Park here in Nairobi, in addition to upgrading sporting facilities in Eldoret, Marsabit, Chuka, Kisumu, Nyeri, Makueni, Kiambu and Kirinyaga Counties," Kenyatta promised.
