All Members of the County Assembly of Uasin Gishu will undergo mandatory Covid-19 testing before proceeding to self-isolation, Speaker David Kiplagat has announced.
This is after the death of Huruma Ward MCA Petet Kiiru Chomba who reportedly succumbed to the deadly virus.
County Assembly Speaker David Kiplagat in a press conference on Sunday, October 18, revealed the autopsy conducted on the body of the late MCA showed that he succumbed to Covid-19.
Kiplagat also directed all the County Assembly staff to proceed on a 21-day compulsory leave.
"We wish to confirm to the public that we have received the autopsy results of the deceased, and we can confirm that he died from Covid-19, in lieu of this notice, all members of staff ans county MCAs will undergo screening, the assembly’s premises will also remain closed for 21 days," said Speaker Kiplagat.
The Speaker also called off the public viewing of MCA Chomba’s body which was scheduled for Monday.
Governor Jackson Mandago expressed his fears on the manner in which residents are flouting Covid-19 guidelines.
"We have dropped guard, I have been around town; people do not wear masks and there is no social distancing. I have seen supermarkets that people are no longer washing hands, we need to go back to the measures that had reduced the infections," Governor Mandago said.
The Ministry of Health has expressed concerns on the rising number of daily Coronavirus infections.
According to health experts, the country might be headed into a second wave infection as seen in the statistics in the past few weeks.
The experts have also raised eyebrows on the Covid-19 related deaths with 12 patients succumbing to the virus on Saturday, October 17, raising the country’s fatality to 825.
Health CAS Rashid Aman also hinted at a possible lockdown should the spike continue.
Among counties put on the spotlight by the ministry are Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi.
Since President Uhuru Kenyatta reopened the economy including bars and restaurants, the positivity rate moved from 4.6 per cent to more than 10 per cent.
