The Homa Bay County Assembly has been shut down for two weeks after an MCA tested positive for Covid-19.

A report from the county’s health department revealed an unknown MCA had his samples tested in Kisumu County, where the results came back positive.

According to reports, the MCA is currently being isolated in one of the Covid-19 treatment centres within Kisumu county.

Majority leader John Kiasa told the media that following the latest development, the leadership had decided to close the assembly for two weeks to prevent the spread of the virus within the assembly precinct.

Kiasa further stated that all MCAs and staff have been directed to undergo mandatory coronavirus testing before they resume normal operations.

The county health surveillance officers have already visited the family members of the MCA who tested positive for Covid-19 and obtained their samples.

Homa Bay becomes the third county to shut down its offices in a span of three days over fears of coronavirus.

On Monday, Nandi County offices were closed for 14 days after eight staff members tested positive for coronavirus.

In a statement on Sunday evening, October 18, County Secretary and Head of Public Service Francis Sang said the shut-down affected operations in eight county departmental offices with six from the Finance and Economic Planning Department, one is from Public Health and Administration while another is from Public Service and e-government.

“The offices shall remain shut to cut the chain of transmission. Meanwhile, the staff from the said departments shall proceed to work from home for a period of 14 days from October 19, 2020,” said Sang.

Nandi County headquarters shut down just a day after Uasin Gishu County Assembly also directed all staff and MCAs to undergo mandatory Covid-19 testing before proceeding to self-isolation and 21-day leave after Huruma Ward MCA Petet Kiiru Chomba succumbed to Covid-19.
