A middle-aged mother and her young child on Tuesday, October 20, drowned in the Lokesem river in Marigat, Baringo County while leaving a wedding.

The local authorities had launched a search for the two after they were previously reported missing.

According to reports, the mother and her 1-year-old son died after they were swept away by heavy floods while crossing the huge stretch of River Lokesem on the road connecting Marigat to Loruk.

At the time, the two were not aware that the water levels had gone up due to heavy rainfall upstream of the river.

Area chief Titus Katikit, while confirming the incident, said that the woman and her child were on their way home from a wedding when they drowned.

Children who were fetching water in the river alerted police after they sighted the two bodies.

The child was still tied to his mother’s back when they were discovered.

Police arrived at the scene on Tuesday, October 20, evening and retrieved the bodies.

Their bodies were taken to the Baringo County Referral Hospital Mortuary.

The ongoing heavy rains in the Tugen Hills region have remained a threat to the residents living on the lower side of the county.

The heavy rains have also interfered with learning in the region with 17 schools yet to resume after they were marooned in floodwater.

Lakes Baringo and Bogoria last week burst their banks flooding schools and other properties displacing at least 3,000 learners in 12 primary schools and 5 secondary schools.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, who visited the area, assured learners that an alternative will be sought for them, no matter the situation.
