  • A military court in Somalia sentenced a Kenyan citizen and two other people to death for allegedly being part of a foreign terror group

Garowe Online reported that Aden Mohamed, 28, was accused of fighting for the terror group in Somalia since 2017.

The court heard that Mohamed who was born in Wajir County was among hundreds of youth who have been sneaking into Somalia to join extremist groups.

According to the prosecutors, this was the first major case involving a Kenyan youth allegedly working with foreign terror groups.

The second suspect, Abshir Mohamed, 47, was also sentenced to death while the third, Mohamud Shiniyow, was sentenced to a 20-year jail term for carrying out assassinations and other terror attacks in Somalia.

The developments in Somalia come at a time when Westgate terror suspects in Kenya are awaiting sentencing.

On October 16, one of the suspects linked to the September 21, 2013 terror attack Liban Abdullah Omar, was freed over lack of evidence.

Two others, Mohamed Ahmed and Hussein Hassan Mustafa were found guilty for the offences of conspiracy to commit a terrorism act and being in possession of material promoting terrorism activity.

Police have voiced concerns over the radicalisation of the youth in several counties in Kenya, with Coast law enforcers recently raising alarm over the reemergence of the separatist group Mombasa Republican Council (MRC).

The group which operated in Kilifi and Mombasa counties allegedly switched camp to Tana River County and its neighbouring towns.

The Kenyan government pledged to renew its war on individuals linked with militant groups. Interior CS Fred Matiang'i ordered the freezing of accounts and property of nine individuals suspected to be financing terrorism activities in the country.
