Police officers in Nairobi have arrested a female student from the University of Eldoret for allegedly stabbing a 33-year-old Nairobi lawyer on Monday, November 2.
According to a police report, the student who is in her early 20s, reportedly stabbed her lover three times on the collarbone, back and abdomen.
Police stated that the two lovers argued over a text on the man's phone, before the suspect allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed her lawyer boyfriend.
Police stated that incident occurred at the lawyer's house in Nairobi's Umoja Inner Core area where the two reportedly spent the night.
The lawyer, who is in critical condition, was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital for emergency care and later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) where he is receiving treatment.
The matter was reported to Buruburu Police Station by Victor Rops, an officer attached to Mama Lucy Hospital.
Police are said to have recovered the knife believed to have been used in the assault as evidence.
The attack comes a month after a Class Six pupil allegedly stabbed her Form 2 boyfriend to death in Nairobi's Lang'ata area.
A JKIA staff was also stabbed to death in June during a fight with his lover. Cases of violence have been on the rise in recent months.
In October, a Makueni-based lawyer Onesmus Masaku died after he was allegedly stabbed by his lover, a police officer in the area.
Cases of domestic violence across the country have increased significantly as a result of Covid-19 restrictions.
According to women’s rights campaigners, the restrictions have fueled an upsurge in gender-based violence across the world, with women and girls more isolated and vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.
In July, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an investigation into rising reports of violence against women and girls.
The president said he was concerned by "increasing tensions" within the home, noting that gender-based violence had increased since the government issued strict measures to curb the deadly virus.
