Nairobi public schools in the disadvantaged areas have over the past years received an infrastructural upgrade under the government's plan to achieve Universal Free Primary and Secondary Education.
Through the Kenya Primary and Secondary Education Programme in Poor Urban Areas of Kenya - a development initiative between the governments of Germany and Kenya - a number of schools in slum areas have been transformed into visually appealing public institutions.
The total Programme funding is approximately Ksh5 Billion where 10% of the amount is contributed by the Government of Kenya.
"The Programme concerns rehabilitation, extension and equipment of pre-existing public and non-formal primary and secondary schools in poor urban areas of Kenya, in order to improve their physical infrastructure and the general teaching and learning environment," reads a part of the statement about the project.
28 primary and secondary schools have had new construction and rehabilitation of approximately 800 classrooms, 250 ancillary rooms, sports grounds, kitchens and sanitary facilities (1200 toilets) offering new and improved learning facilities for over 40.000 students.
Among the schools that have benefitted include, St Elisabeth Primary School which was located in Lunga Lunga, Industrial area.
Completed in 2011, the cost of Renovation was at Ksh166 Million where 40 classrooms were constructed, as well as other amenities.
Another beneficiary is Heidemarie Mathare 4A Primary School, which was refurbished in 2009 and the most noticeable change being the vibrant splashes of colour that bring the school to life.
After the Ksh123 million facelift, the school's headteacher noted that the pupils were motivated by their new surroundings and were doing better at school.
