Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege on Friday, November 13, revisited her relationship with the late vernacular singer John DeMathew during a ceremony at the Emory Hotel in Kileleshwa.

Chege, who was speaking at an appreciation ceremony for media boss Rose Kimotho, referenced a joke by ICT CS Joe Mucheru who also present at the ceremony.

She said Mucheru had confessed knowing her through her association with the late DeMathew's songs.

"I was seated with CS Mucheru and I was telling him about my days at Kameme FM and he was surprised and told me ‘I only came to know you while you were with DeMathew," Chege stated.

"It got me thinking about my friendship with John and the song that people say he composed for someone special," she added.

The MP was featured on the song Njata Yakwa as a video vixen - which she admitted had led to a much publicised rumour that she was the musician's lover.

Chege stated that she only featured on the song because at the time, DeMatthew, together with other vernacular artists, were going through financial problems.

"At the time, the artists would sell their rights for the original song. Hence, they would only get very little money. However, if the song was to have a video, it would be different because they would get their rights back.

"That is how I agreed to act in the song. I was not the Njata, I just acted," Chege disclosed.

She added that the musician had already released the audio of the song even before the two met.

"It's good to set the record straight, DeMatthew had released that song in 1999 before I met him, but I featured in the video much later," she stated.

Chege was speaking during a ceremony where veteran broadcasters, marketers and advertisers organised a surprise media boss Rose Kimotho for the trailblazing work she had done for the Kenyan media industry.

Kimotho is the founder and Managing Director of Regional Reach Limited,  a company that launched Kameme FM in 1999 - the first vernacular FM station in Kenya. In 2007, see founded K24 - the first news-only television channel in Kenya.
