The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday, November 25, published a photo of a prominent Thika Road businessman man who is suspected to be swindling Kenyans off their hard-earned money.

Benson Mugendi Mbaka alias Dr Benson Mugendi Mbaka, the director of Lifeline Group of hospitals was arrested on Thursday last week after he was accused of fraud involving medical tenders worth Ksh 200 million.

Following his arrest, the investigative body has indicated that there was additional information that other individuals who were not party to the original suit may have also lost millions of shillings to him.

DCI further asked anyone who might have been defrauded by him to make a statement at the DCI headquarters.

"We are therefore appealing to such persons to make a report with the officer in charge of economic and commercial crimes unit at the DCI Headquarters- block B ground floor room number 12," reads the statement.

Mugendi is accused of masquerading as a trained medical doctor who is purported of awarding tenders for the supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).

He is accused of obtaining money from clients before issuing non-existing tenders and fake Local Purchase Orders (LPOs).

"The doctor would allegedly direct the unsuspecting businessmen to supply samples of their goods before the tender is finally awarded," a detective stated.

DCI further warned Kenyans of fake schemes and tenders. The detectives launched a crackdown against swindlers and scammers, with several arrested in Nairobi County.

Mbaka, alongside his wife, operates three popular hospitals along Thika Road and in Ruiru sub-county.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has insisted that he is keen on curbing corruption within his Ministry.

The CS stated that he is facing a challenge from cartels within Afya House and added that the whole sector needs a shake-up.
