Kenyans.co.ke takes a look at safety tips that experts propose motorists should follow through in case their vehicle breaks down on the highway.

Turn your Hazard Lights On

Flick on your hazard lights to alert the incoming vehicles that something is wrong with your car.

It's important to note that your hazard lights should be kept on the whole duration of time your car is broken down until help arrives.

Pull Off To The Side Of The Road If You Can

If it's possible pull over to the side of the road, turn your wheel from the road and put on the emergency brakes. If you can't pull over to the side of the road, do not exit the vehicle. Turn on the exterior and interior lights of the car to increase visibility for the car and stay put as you seek help.

Exit the Vehicle

Highways are heavily flooded with cars hence leaving the car might seem to be a risky move. However, if you can exit the vehicle, consider the incoming traffic before making a move. For motorists, it's advisable to leave on the left side of the vehicle as you watch out for incoming traffic.

Place Warning Triangles

Place warning triangles around your car, as this often comes with the car's safety kit.

This is essential as it alerts the incoming traffic and they can adjust their speed while switching lanes.

Try and mitigate the problem of the car.

If possible, analyze the car engine to note the cause of the breakdown. In case that you cannot establish the root cause of the problem alert any relevant person who may offer help. Also, motorists passing by may be of assistance to aid in your situation.
